The CDC expects the outbreak of the cyclospora parasite to stretch into August.

So far, 1,645 cases of the stomach bug have been confirmed in 34 states yet there are 5,000 more potential cases of the illness that are being tested by the CDC.

The stomach bug causes severe stomach illness with symptoms that include cramping, diarrhea, nausea and fatigue. However, those symptoms don’t start until a week or two after eating an infected food.

The CDC has not confirmed the source of the outbreak which infects all types of fruits and vegetables.

To reduce the risk of illness, the CDC says you should wash hands and fruits under water. The only way to kill the parasite is by cooking food.

Grocery shoppers are telling us either they are cutting out certain fruits and vegetables until the source is found others are staying vigilant about cleaning.

“I absolutely do I have three babies at home. We are also into fitness so health is wealth," says Elidez McAllister.

“I would be very cautious if I’m going to purchase absolutely," said shopper John Gaffney.

The CDC says the illness is not transmitted from one person to another through casual contact.

The greatest amount of cases have been found in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.
