Multiple businesses at the East Meadow Plaza shopping center were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a construction crew struck a large gas main, according to the Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal.
Officials say the call came in around noon after the gas line was damaged near the shopping center. As a precaution, businesses were evacuated and shoppers were directed away from the area while emergency crews responded.
“You could definitely smell strong gas in the parking lot,” said Marty Karfinkle, who works at Pet Supplies Plus in the shopping center. “All the storekeepers and everyone else were chased out of the stores. Employees were standing in the parking lot, and they kept moving us farther and farther away. We just had to wait.”
Officials say there is no threat to the public.
