The heat isn’t only uncomfortable, it can be dangerous - especially for the homeless if they have no escape indoors.
The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless wants people to know there are resources they can use to stay cool.
Outreach counselors were out Wednesday afternoon handing out water and Gatorade to help people stay hydrated. They’re also letting them know about cooling centers like libraries scattered across the island.
“Heat exhaustion. That happens all the time. People die every year from the elements,” said street outreach counselor Matthew Malamed. “Especially if you don't have access to proper hydration. And a lot of these people might just be sitting in the shade, but it's still insanely hot all day long.”
The organization says it has people ready to help with transportation if anyone needs it.
