The City of Long Beach is cracking down on the use of illegal fireworks ahead of the summer season.

Fines are now increased to up to $15,000 and the new ordinance also means you could even spend 15 days in jail.

The measure was passed by city councilmembers, with a vote of 4-0, at a meeting on June 2.

The amended code also includes the sale and discharge of firearms and other explosives.

Previously, the fine for setting off fireworks was $250 and there was no possibility of jailtime.

A judge will decide which penalty to impose in each case.

The ordinance went into effect immediately.
