Over 300 residents in Orange remain without power after severe storms moved through the area Saturday night, bringing down a large tree and damaging power lines along Oakwood Avenue.

The fallen tree knocked out electricity to several nearby buildings, including three senior apartment complexes, leaving many residents without air conditioning, refrigeration and other essential services.

Residents said the outage has been especially difficult as temperatures have risen.

“We are suffering in that building; there’s no electricity. Our food is going bad in the refrigerator,” said resident Russell Scott.

Throughout the day, some residents gathered at a park across the street from the affected buildings to escape the heat and get fresh air while waiting for service to return.

Family members also stopped by to check on loved ones.

"They haven't had any lights since eight o'clock last night, so that means they can't cook or anything," said Derece Webb, whose uncle is currently affected by the outage.

The situation is also raising concerns for those who rely on electricity for medical equipment.

“What worried me was when I saw the paramedics coming in the building,” said Wayne Boomer, who is visiting from Alabama. “There are people here who depend on oxygen.”

Orange Fire Department personnel, police and EMS crews were on scene monitoring the situation and assisting residents as needed.

PSEG crews are on scene working to repair damage and bring power back. The utility company expects power to be restored by Monday morning.
