New Rochelle police say a gun was recovered following a police chase that caused a school to go into a lockout.

Police say the chase, which started on Interstate 95, came to an end near Trinity Elementary School on Thursday morning. News 12 spoke with one parent who described what happened while she and her child were outside for a field day.

"All of a sudden, the police officers came in through the back and they started telling everybody to go inside," said a parent.

The school stayed in a lockout until police gave the all-clear to return outside.

The New Rochelle police department says the suspect and a gun were found located in a wooded section of a private apartment complex.

The suspect is identified as Eric Whilby. Suffolk County police say Whilby shot his ex-girlfriend. Whilby traveled roughly 40 miles, where he was caught in New Rochelle about eight hours after the shooting.

He was arraigned in a Long Island courtroom on Friday morning. News 12 spoke with the sister of the victim.

"He was like a brother to us. We trusted him. My mom trusted him. I trusted him. It's very disappointing for me because I treated him like a brother," said Shelly Dekin, the victim's sister.

New Rochelle parents say they thank the school and police for keeping everyone safe Thursday morning.
