According to AAA, nearly 45 million Americans are expected to travel during Memorial Day weekend, with 39 million being drivers.

AAA says last year gas prices in New York City were $3.17 over Memorial Day weekend. Currently, the average price at the pump is $4.66.

AAA says gas prices are at the highest since summer 2022.

Myriam Robles was filling up her gas tank at a station on Tremont Avenue where prices are starting at $4.59.

Robles told News 12, she thought prices would be lowered by now, but the increase has forced her to skip the beach this year and stay home.

“They too high, it’s hard to afford traveling long distance. I’m just going to stay locally,” she said.

Despite the spike, the expected traffic on the roads is also a cause for concern. AAA advises people behind the wheel, “Slow Down, Move Over, and Drive Sober.”

AAA responded to more than 350,000 calls for emergency road assistance last year, with calls ranging from dead batteries, flat tires and empty gas tanks.
