The City of White Plains provided an update on Monday on its Private Parking Garage Inspection Program.

Mayor Justin Brasch says it stems from a rule adopted by the New York State Department of State which requires all parking garage owners to perform structural assessments of their garages every three years.

The conditions must be assessed by a New York state-licensed professional engineer. Owners must submit the report to their local authority in order to obtain an operating permit.

Monday's coverage

Brasch says there are 96 garages within the city that are subject to this program.

In October, News 12 reported on a privately-owned garage at 50 Hale Avenue that partially collapsed.

"We are making sure that the private garage owners are maintaining their garages, keeping them safe and that they are safe. With regard to our garages, they are positively safe and, again, they're going to need a substantial amount of maintenance over time, and we will do that," Brasch said.

Later in October, the Lexington-Grove West Garage, which is owned by the city, was closed indefinitely after being deemed unsafe.

In April, the city announced its finishing plans to repair the east side of the garage (100 Main Street), but any specifics were not mentioned.

News 12 spoke with people who said that while they wish there were more parking options, they appreciate any effort to keep the parking garages safe.
