BEACON, N.Y. Contemporary art can be confusing and even intimidating for some people. Two artists at Beacon Artists Union are encouraging visitors to walk in with curiosity and trust their own reactions.

Beacon Artists Union, also known as BAU, is an artist cooperative gallery run by 14 artists. The gallery is currently featuring work by artists Nate Hill and George Kimmerling, who encourage people bring their own stories and interpretations to contemporary art.

“I always hope with my work that people come, they bring their own kind of stories,” Hill said. “They interpret it however they will.”

George Kimmerling, the second artist profiled, says BAU wants people to feel welcome, even if they are unsure what a piece means at first.

“You can simply walk in and say, I’m going to go see something that I might like and learn. That’s the first step,” Kimmerling said.

Visitors told News 12 that contemporary art can feel challenging when the meaning is not immediately clear. Hill and Kimmerling say that personal reaction is part of the experience.

The artists hope the gallery invites people to stop, look, ask questions and find their own connection to contemporary art.
