The proposed 140-foot cell tower at the Knox School in St. James remains on hold after the Nissequogue Village Planning Board did not reach a vote Monday night.

The tower, proposed for the school’s property on Long Beach Road, returned before the planning board, drawing continued opposition from some residents who say they are concerned about the impact on the character of the community.

“The Knox School, from what I know about it, is a small kind of quaint little place,” said Evangelos Georgakopoulos, of St. James. “It will be weird. It wouldn’t import well with the surrounding environment.”

A letter submitted by Michael Utevsky, mayor of Head of the Harbor, states his “firm opposition” to the Nissequogue Village Planning Board. In the letter, Utevsky stated environmental and aesthetic concerns, writing that the tower would affect the character of the surrounding area and calling it incompatible with the community.

Planning board members said there were “inconsistencies” in the proposal, requiring the applicant to make modifications and resubmit the application at a later date.

Once the changes are submitted, the proposal will return to the board for further review. There is no timeline for a final vote.

News 12 reached out to the Knox School for comment and is awaiting a response.
