Elected officials and the Police Benevolent Association joined fallen Officer Didarul Islam's family Wednesday morning to announce a proposed bill.

Islam was working off-duty security when he was killed in the Midtown shooting in July.

The Didarul Islam Police Recruitment Act would allow people like Officer Islam, who started their service in other NYPD departments to transfer credit into the police pension fund.

This would benefit around 3,000 current NYPD members and all future recruits.

The proposal was announced during the NYPD's ongoing staffing crisis, and officials are hoping the bill can help this issue.

"Their dedication should not come at the cost of lost time or diminished opportunity. It should be recognized respected and reflected in the system that help shape their careers," said Council Member Amanda Farias.
