Police say a mother and child were among five people who were injured in a two-car crash Saturday morning on the border of Levittown and Wantagh.

Detectives say it happened just after 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of North Jerusalem Road and Gardiners Avenue.

News 12 is told three people were taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The mother and child were airlifted to Cohen Children's Medical Center.

The crash scene was clear by noon.

Police say the injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.

After hearing the sound of cars crashing right outside of his house, Harris Rozakeas says he ran outside and called 911.

"There were two cars. Looked like they had a head-on collision. The woman in the black car, the door had to be forced open so she could get out," he said.

Police had not confirmed the child's age as of Saturday evening but Rozekas said they appeared young.

"It looked like there was a two-year-old sitting in the back seat," he said.

Neighbors in the area say crashes happen near the intersection too often. One homeowner told News 12 off-camera that a car went through his fence into his backyard about two weeks ago.

"Right across the street, you can see if you look across, you'll see a brand-new fence over there. It went into their backyard," Rozakeas said and added that people drive too fast in the area.

"Everybody's anxious, but they need to slow down in this intersection," he said.
