A group of volunteers are spending the week improving the playground at Compo Beach in Westport.

The Compo Beach Playground Renovation Project aims to maintain and restore the playground, which was last renovated in 2006.

Volunteers are working to make the playground more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

Organizers say the project has brought the community together.

"We raised about $850,000 from across the community so that's going to include some new surface for some of accessibility features and a maintenance fund so we can keep this going for a while. And then we have had approximately 50 to 60 volunteers a shift. We started on Monday. Overall, I think we've had almost 700 unique volunteers sign up," says Samantha Owades.

The volunteers will be working on the project until Saturday.

Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up online or show up at the beach and fill out the necessary form there.

There are three shifts: 8 a.m., 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Meals are provided for each shift and there is a kid zone, where parents can drop off their kids.

Owades say volunteers older than 14 can assist with the actual build, and that many high school students help in the kids zone.
