Temperatures were downright chilly this morning across Long Island. Overnight lows were in the mid-50s and even upper 40s in spots. It’s a rare sight for August and more typical for late September.
How low did we go?
The low temperature officially for Islip at McArthur Airport was only 54 degrees. That’s the coldest morning since May 31, and the coldest August morning since 2019. It didn’t beat the record low for the date of 47 degrees.
Temperatures dropped even lower at Westhampton Beach. The Gabreski Airport reported a low of 46 degrees, which is more typical for October.
What’s next?
It’s safe to say the hottest days of summer are behind us, but there’s still hot weather in forecast.
Warmer air is on the way for the weekend. High temperatures will reach the mid 80s and the risk for rain remains low through at least Sunday. It’s a fantastic close to the last full weekend of August.
Early September will be likely near average according to the Climate Prediction Center which is in the upper 70s or near 80. However, it’s not unheard of to get hot in September. Just last year, Long Island had it’s hottest stretch of the year during the first week of September. It hit 90° four times.
The outlook for Autumn looks much warmer than normal for Long Island and New England. According to the Climate Prediction Center has high confidence that September through November will overall be be warmer than normal in our region.
