The Town of Babylon Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the Summer Olympics with an opening ceremony and watch party at Tanner Park in Copiague Friday night.

There are also several food trucks featuring local and international cuisine.

“It’s a time for America to shine and local and state athletes. It’s the example of perseverance, hard work, effort," says Viscel Moore, deputy commissioner of Town of Babylon Parks and Recreation Department.

The summer Olympic Games in Paris started Friday and will run through Aug. 11.

Several Long Islanders are going for the gold, including Brionna Jones, of North Babylon, who will play on Puerto Rico’s women's basketball team. Her first game with team Puerto Rico will take place Saturday against Serbia.

Halle Hazzard, who is from Commack, will run in the 100 meters for Grenada on Aug. 2.

“I think that’s awesome. It’s good for Long Island. It’s good to promote the people here," said Lauren Moran, a watch party guest.

Rockville Centre native and soccer star Crystal Dunn will represent Team USA.

Christopher Borzor, a Hatian American from Baldwin, qualified to compete in the men’s 100-meter race, representing Haiti.
