Family rallies for harsher penalties for drivers under the influence of marijuana following fatal incident

Family and friends are seeking justice for a man who was struck and killed by a driver allegedly under the influence of drugs.
Raymond Hubbard, who used a wheelchair, was fatally struck on Middle Country Road in Coram back in February.
Police say the driver, Nicholas Doxtader, of Centereach, was impaired at the time of the incident.

On Sunday, friends and family held a rally in remembrance of Raymond – and are seeking harsher charges for Doxtader.
“My brother was hit and killed, they are basically charging the guy with a misdemeanor,” says Tavina Hubbard.
The family rallied for stricter penalties for drivers under the influence of marijuana. They wanted charges similar to DWI penalties. Depending on the offense, those can carry a sentence of seven years.
“We want stricter laws and upgrade the charges,” says Debrena Hubbard. “He’s only being charged with misdemeanor which is a slap on the wrist, no jail time.”
Doxtader spoke only to News 12 at a court appearance earlier this year, where he apologized for the fatal incident.
Doxtader’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 22. The Hubbard family says they will be in attendance.
