Scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, known for his work on the Manhattan Project during World War II - and the subject of one of the summer's most popular movies - has ties to Long Island.
Oppenheimer and his family spent many of his own summers on the South Shore.
A 2 ½ story colonial revival home on Saxon Avenue in Bay Shore was sold to the Oppenheimer's in 1916.
Barry Dlouhy, president of the Bay Shore Historical Society, says Oppenheimer participated in many activities in the community.
“He was very interested in sailing on the water and water sports. He enjoyed horseback riding, and he enjoyed just going around town,” Dlouhy says.
Oppenheimer also wrote poems during his college years about the area where he spent 12 of his summers.
Dlouhy says the Bay Shore Historical Society works to preserve the home where the key historical figure spent so much time.
“If we lose our history, we lose a big piece of who we are and what we are,” Dlouhy says.
