Plans for the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes moved full speed ahead on Saturday, making history along the way.
Jena Antonucci become the first female trainer to win the race. The winning jockey, Javier Castellano, is a Long Islander who also won this year's Kentucky Derby.
There was a cheerful crowd during the close race as the No. 3 horse, Arcangelo, won the Belmont Stakes.
Spectator Justin Masi was happy to bet on Arcangelo -- he won $1,000 at the track.
"I called my uncle on the LIRR, I said, 'Who do I bet on?' He said Arcangelo, so I put $150 on it, so I won," Masi said.
Hundreds of thousands of fans attended the 155th running of the Belmont Stakes.
"I expected a big turn out and we're getting a big turnout. I think we'll get 50,000 people today, which is nice turnout," said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
There was also a large Nassau police presence with safety as their top priority.
"We plan to make sure that we are in the preventative mode. We don't want to be reactive --- we want to be preventive," said Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
The Belmont Stakes is the oldest and longest race of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown at a mile-and-a-half distance.
