The two most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the tri-state area are on Long Island, according to a study released Tuesday.
The Tri-State Transportation Campaign ranks Hempstead Turnpike the most dangerous with 15 pedestrian fatalities between 2005 and 2006. The accidents happened mostly in Elmont, Franklin Square and Hempstead, the report says. Sunrise Highway near County Road 39 is ranked second with 12 fatalities.
Jose Lopez, of Elmont, says he?s not surprised Hempstead Turnpike was named most dangerous. He meets his daughter on the turnpike every day after school to talk with her. He says it?s the drivers that are the problem.
?If I'm in the way, they beep at me and keep on going,? Lopez says. ?It reminds me of Queens Boulevard, the boulevard of death, this looks similar to it.?
Elmont East End Civic President Patrick Nicolosi says steps like adding crossing guards and police and changing the timing of the traffic lights need to be taken to make the road safer.
