Hazmat crews descended on an elderly woman?s Brentwood home Monday and rescued about two dozen animals from filthy conditions.
It all started when fire crews responded to a call from the homeowner about a small fire. Two firefighters became ill from the stench inside the home and were taken to the hospital. Officials say the house was filled with animals and feces and smelled of ammonia. The elderly woman was also taken to the hospital.
Hazmat and animal rescue officials were then called to the house. SPCA workers took cats, newborn kittens, birds, hamsters, a turtle and a dog away from the house.
The woman?s neighbor says the homeowner will be devastated her animals were taken from the home. Officials say the home will likely be condemned.
