Two brothers are in critical but stable condition at Stony Brook Medical Center after they were pulled from their backyard pool in Mount Sinai.
Authorities say 5-year-old Emmanuel Paul and 2-year-old Jeffrey Paul were found floating face down in the pool after falling in Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say the boys' 12-year-old brother tried performing CPR on them while another brother called police. The 12-year-old reportedly has no formal training in CPR but was able to resuscitate both boys before paramedics arrived.
Neighbor Tom Izzo says there is a fence around the Paul family?s pool. ?I see them playing around it all the time,? Izzo says. ?I'm sure it was just one of those freak things.?
Suffolk police say the boys? mother was at work and the father ran out to get gas. The younger children were being watched by 11-year-old twin brothers and a 12-year-old brother. According to Detective Lt. Gregory McVeigh, the oldest brother lost sight of the boys for a moment but almost immediately found them in the pool.
Brookhaven officials are conducting an investigation to see if the fence around the pool broke any town codes. Child protective services has been notified that the children were left home alone at the time of the incidents, officials say.
