A fire ripped through a building in Coram, killing at least 15 dogs and two cats.
Police say a 911 call came in around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday about the fire on Middle Country Road. The location was most recently the Diamandi Diner. It was a Pancake Cottage restaurant before.
The Brookhaven fire marshal says four dogs and one cat were rescued, resuscitated and taken to an animal facility in Selden.
Officials say the owner of the store was trying to turn the building into a pet store, but he did not have the proper permits yet.
The Suffolk SPCA tells News 12 that the fire marshal visited the store Tuesday and gave the owner a cease-and-desist order to stop renovations.
The cause of the fire appears to be non-criminal in nature, according to police.
The Town of Brookhaven says the owner of the pet store was issued a misdemeanor violation, which is answerable in district court.
