An 11-year-old girl was shot in the ankle Monday after a gunman opened fire on a group of kids in Hempstead.
Police are still searching for the man and say the shooting happened just after 5 p.m. in front of the La Libertad Bodega on Evans Avenue. Autra Noel says her daughter Deandra Moss and other relatives were at the store Monday night and the shots rang out when they were leaving.
Witnesses say the man may have been involved in a prior dispute with someone else and that the children were not the intended targets. One witness says the man, described as dark-skinned and young, was crouched behind a fence firing at a man in the vicinity of the children.
Moss was treated at the hospital and released. Police say no one else was hurt. Anyone with information about the shooting should call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-224-TIPS.
