Long Island's most dangerous road for pedestrians is about to become safer.

Today marks the completion of 11 raised medians along a 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County.

The state Department of Transportation says the raised surfaces will help those crossing the road outside of designated crossing areas.

Hempstead Turnpike has been named the region's most dangerous road for people on foot for the last five years.
