A Wyandanch woman is facing charges in a hit-and-run that killed a grandfather in Freeport.

Nassau police say that Octavio Espinal, 76, was crossing North Grove Street at the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue on Nov. 8 when he was struck by a light-colored sedan that then fled from the scene.

According to prosecutors, Heidy Zelaya-Almendarez, 24, was the driver of the sedan and surveillance shows her hiding the vehicle in the backyard of her Wyandanch home.

Almendarez's attorney says she may not have been the driver at the time of the crash.

She was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting with a fatality and tampering with physical evidence.
