A new report shows that Wyandanch residents have been hit harder by the mortgage crisis than any other community in the state.
Wyandanch ranked number one on the Empire Justice Center's list of the top 10 New York communities hit by foreclosures and defaults. According to the study, nearly 600 homes have already been foreclosed in the community.
In addition to Wyandanch's ranking, the study shows high rates across the island. According to the report, thousands of Long Island families are in danger of losing their homes.
Out of the subprime loans for Suffolk County made in 2006, 12 were foreclosed on and another 33 percent were in jeopardy by 2007. Nassau County rates aren't much better. Ten percent of the Nassau loans were defaulted, and 30 percent were in jeopardy a year later.
