Since the election on Tuesday, many women have taken to social media advising other women to look into getting long-term birth control equipment like intrauterine devices - continuous, removable contraception known as IUDs. 

The posts began over concerns that president-elect Donald Trump will go through with his promises to both dismantle the Affordable Care Act and defund Planned Parenthood.

Joann Smith, an employee at Planned Parenthood of Nassau County, says that Trump has created a culture of fear.

"The president-elect during his campaign promised to defund Planned Parenthood," Smith said. "They heard that and women in our community depend upon Planned Parenthood for their birth control, for their well women exams."

The IUDs last anywhere from three to eight years. As one tweet suggested, "Get your IUD...Get your birth control that will outlast Trump."

Without insurance they can cost up to $800. Existing plans through the ACA fully cover contraception.

Some people, like Frank Russo of the American Family Association of New York, oppose contraception on moral grounds.

"For people to engage in contraception, which I know the majority of people are doing today, is not proper," Russo says. "And I don't think the government should fund it."
