A woman is dead after a hit-and-run in Crown Heights.
It happened just before 5:30 a.m. Friday on Eastern Parkway at the intersection of Schenectady Avenue. Police said an 18-wheeler struck Deborah Koonce, 69, of Brooklyn.
Investigators said the driver didn't stop. They believe the person behind the wheel may not have even realized what happened.
The incident is now raising more concerns about safety.
"Sometimes there's a red light, and people will still be in the intersection and they [drivers] still going," said one man.
The city's Vision Zero data show there have been five reported injuries for 2025 at the same intersection.
This isn't the first fatality on Eastern Parkway. In June, an SUV hit and killed an 8-year-old boy as he was trying to cross at Albany Avenue. The advocacy group Transportation Alternatives said Eastern Parkway is the sixth most dangerous street in the borough for pedestrians.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transportation said the agency will be reviewing the location of the crash while they continue to work to deliver safer streets for all New Yorkers.
