A routine traffic stop on Sunrise Highway led to a chase that ended in a two-car crash in East Islip.
A Suffolk County police spokesman told News 12 that a patrol officer stopped a 2017 Nissan Maxima for speeding on the westbound side of Sunrise Highway at Locust Avenue in Bohemia around 12:55 p.m.
According to the spokesman, the driver fled the scene and later struck a 2009 Chevrolet HHR at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Pauchogue Avenue in East Islip.
Three people in the Nissan fled on foot and were arrested by pursuing officers.
Alex Bennett, who was working across the street from the crash scene, told News 12 that the owner of the nearby Hometown Cafe tackled a fleeing suspect. That good Samaritan was later taken to the hospital with chest pains.
Police say two females in the Chevrolet were transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Charges against the three suspects are pending.
