Family members of a man who died in police custody last weekend say they have a witness to corroborate their claim their loved one was attacked by officers.
The family of 24-year-old Kenny Lazo was told he died after a struggle during his arrest. A young man, identifying himself as Eric, says he was in the Third Precinct station the night of Lazo?s death. He says he heard a group of officers joking about how the Bay Shore man was beaten with a flashlight.
Police say they saw Lazo selling drugs out of his car, pulled him over and tried to arrest him. They say there was a violent struggle and Lazo tried to grab an officer?s gun. Officers admit they beat him with a flashlight. He was subdued, brought to the precinct and died there a half-hour later, police say.
Lazo?s family members say they want to hear the truth about what happened and see that justice is carried out for those responsible.
Preliminary autopsy results reportedly show Lazo had an enlarged heart and cocaine in his system at the time of his death. The family is paying for a second, independent autopsy.
