Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) CEO Richard Kessel announced Wednesday the Valentine's Day storm caused more than 43,000 outages across the Island.
Kessel says the wind, which measured at gusts of more than 50 mph, bore more responsibility for the outages than the snow and freezing rain. He says the biggest trouble spot was on Nassau County's south shore, south of the Southern State Parkway. According to Kessel, trees falling on power lines caused the majority of problems.
LIPA crews were working 16-hour shifts in an effort to keep up with the storm and growing customer outages.
