325ds agoA massive financial boost was given to help programs for New York City children looking to learn more about environmental science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries announced $300,000 in funding for the Wildlife Conservation Society, a nonprofit headquartered at the Bronx Zoo.
Jeffries toured the New York Aquarium at Coney Island Saturday and visited a class of young marine biologists in training. The students learned how to treat injured animals and got to check out a harbor seal and sea lion as part of the nonprofit's program.
Jeffries says the funding will go towards a Wildlife Conservation Society STEM learning and exploration program for students in schools from lower income neighborhoods.
The aim of the program is to prepare students for jobs in growing green and environmentally friendly industries.
“I'm thankful for the funding, the teachers it will train, and look forward to the young people who are impacted,” Jeffries says.
The Wildlife Conservation Society says it was able to provide opportunities for 900 students from lower income communities last year in Brooklyn alone.
