NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, of Greenlawn, was fatally shot in the line of duty one year ago, and now his widow is talking about that tragic day and having to raise her two sons without her husband.
"Never in a million years would I think i'd have to tell my 4- and 3-year-olds their daddy was gone," Lisa Tuozzolo says.
Sgt. Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran of the NYPD, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute in the Bronx.
"They brought me through long hallways to a conference room and I was told that Paul was killed," Lisa recalls. "I just remember screaming over and over and over again."
About 20,000 police officers from around the country attended Sgt. Tuozzolo's funeral, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke as well.
"We feel your pain, we feel your loss, we are here for you," the mayor said then.
Lisa says the police community, family, friends and neighbors have supported her family since her husband's death. And she remains strong for her boys, but it isn't easy.
"He would be really appreciative knowing the fact that his boys -- his pride and joy, the thing that he loved so much -- were being cared for and being taken care of," she says.
Lisa also shares her late husband's story, visiting precincts and speaking with officers. So does Sgt. Tuozzolo's partner, Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, who was also shot on that fateful day. He survived and now is working to ensure his partner's legacy endures. He created "Patches for Paul."
"We're putting on this patch and remembering her husband, her hero, my hero," Kwo says.
Earlier this year, a street in the Bronx was renamed for Sgt. Tuozzolo. And in September, the Town of Huntington announced that a new spray park will be built in his memory. His wife and sons attended the ground-breaking ceremony.
