A West Islip teenager was killed Tuesday morning after a head-on collision with a box truck.
Police say Julia Schweers, 19, was driving north on Higbie Lane just before 6 a.m. when she was hit by a truck that was attempting to make a left turn on to Union Avenue. They say she was killed instantly only about a half-mile from her home. It was not clear where she was traveling to or from.
The driver of the truck stayed on the scene. No criminal charges have been filed.
Schweers graduated from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip in 2014. Her father Keith Schweers was a highly regarded football coach at the school for seven years.
