West Islip man indicted for manslaughter, DWI, leaving scene of Robert Moses Causeway crash

A West Islip man has been indicted on numerous charges for a crash that killed a pedestrian on the Robert Moses Causeway, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors say Stephen Aylward, 63, was drunk and high when he veered off the roadway near Exit RM 2W-E around 1:30 p.m. on June 25. The vehicle struck 27-year-old Yusuf Gull, of Bay Shore, as he was walking along the shoulder.
Police arrived soon after receiving a call reporting the unconscious man seen lying there around 1:38 p.m. He was later pronounced dead.
Prosecutors say Aylward fled the scene and didn’t call police until around 30 minutes later. Officers took him into custody at his home.
The charges against him include manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired, and leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death without reporting.
He is set to return to court on Oct. 16 and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
