A Bellmore hardware shop closed its doors Saturday after more than 90 years in business, but not before its owner received a sincere thanks from members of the community.
Weinman's Hardware Shop on Bedford Avenue has closed down. One by one, some of Weinmen's customers turned up to say their goodbyes.
The owner, 89-year-old Roy Weinman, took over the family business in 1935. His father built a general store in 1922, but Weinman moved it across the street and renamed it when he took it over.
He is retiring and selling the shop in part because of lost business to big box stores.
Despite the competition, Weinman's customers say there's no store that could compete with his personal touch. Many said that Weinman knew his customers' names and families, and would order items for them if he didn't have them in stock.
Besides the items he sold, Roy Weinman was also known for being a fix-it who was always willing to work on broken items for a fair price.
The World War II veteran says he plans to get more involved in charity and spend time with family in his retirement. His son, David, is also opening an equipment repair shop a few blocks away.
