A high impact winter storm is expected to begin Saturday overnight into Sunday with several hours of fluffy, fast-accumulating snow.
The storm is set to start near 2 a.m. Sunday. Snow accumulates rapidly and it covers roads, too since temperatures will be very cold. It may be cold enough for some road treatments and rock salts to be ineffective. This is very important to know as this can create super slippery conditions that might be dangerous to travel in.
Snow will be fluffy at first, but then gets heavier/chunkier as the day goes on. Ice and sleet mixes in for parts of lower central, coastal, and southern New Jersey as a warm nose of air rudely intrudes into the storm near 1 p.m. This mixing would compress snow and create a glaze of ice. This will make for very slippery conditions and make the snow heavier to shovel.
Mixing takes place in central and southern zones through the rest of the afternoon and evening. This line may lift more north than expected and needs to be watched carefully for last minute changes.
Snow still falls heavily in northern New Jersey through the afternoon and evening before slowly tapering into the night. A snow band can develop to bring totals to over 12" with the upper forecast near 18" possible. With a late night lull, snow showers may redevelop into Monday to dust over the accumulation one last time before finally departing to very cold temperatures again.
A small change in the storm track could dramatically change the forecast. Stay with the News 12 Storm Watch Team several times a day for more information about how this storm will impact you.
