Weather: Wind wallops LI; Joaquin heads east
The East Coast is breathing a sigh of relief as Hurricane Joaquin tracks far east of the seaboard, but Long Island is still dealing with the effects of a separate coastal storm today.
The rain has tapered off, but strong winds will remain today with gusts of 20 to 35 mph.
Some flooding and beach erosion have been reported in low-lying coastal areas along the South Shore. A coastal flood advisory remains in effect for times of high tide today.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 50s. The wind will continue, with gusts of up to 35 mph, and there's a chance of a spotty shower or drizzle.
Sunday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the low 60s. Monday will be breezy with partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-60s.
Hurricane Joaquin, meanwhile, caused some damage in the Bahamas before heading out east to sea. Roofs were damaged and trees were uprooted, and a cargo ship remains unaccounted for. The Coast Guard is searching for the ship, which had 33 crew members aboard, including 28 Americans. The storm, now a Category 4, could hit Bermuda as it heads further out to sea.
