Brutally cold temperatures across Long Island prompted the National Weather Service to issue a wind chill advisory for most of the day Tuesday.

News 12 Long Island Meteorologist Bill Korbel says a new record low for Jan. 7 was set Tuesday morning at Long Island MacArthur Airport. Temperatures dipped to 12 degrees. The previous record was 13 degrees, set back in 1988.

Forecasters say temperatures felt like 20 below zero with wind gust up to 45 mph.

Low temperatures Tuesday evening are expected to reach 6 degrees with wind chills at 0 to 15 degrees below zero.

Korbel says temperatures will reach the low 20s Wednesday.
