The North Bellmore North Merrick clubhouse is boarded up after an early morning fire on Friday ripped through the building – destroying baseball equipment, uniforms and 50 years of Little League memorabilia.
The Nassau County fire marshal says the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious and may have been sparked by a stove.
“We were all devastated as a community. This has been a staple for North Bellmore North Merrick Little League for years,” said Mike Rut, a board member with the North Bellmore North Merrick Little League.
Members of the Little League say they plan to rebuild the clubhouse. A GoFundMe is raising money to help in that process. Neighboring leagues have also offered to donate equipment.
Games will still be played this weekend.
