'We end this month with hope': Suffolk COVID-19 hospitalizations fall below 1,000

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone provided his Thursday COVID-19 update, striking a tone of hope as numbers fell.
Briefing Notes:
- County dips below 1,000 total hospitalizations for first time in a month -- decrease of 77 in past day. Peak hospitalizations were 1,658.
- Bellone: 'We end this month in a far better place than we began.'
- 34,802 total confirmed COVID-19 cases - increase of 723 over last 24 hours.
- 22 additional deaths - toll reaches 1,177.
- Decrease in 25 people on ICU beds - total of 344.
- 933 hospital beds available, 18 ICU beds available.
- 114 hospital discharges in past day.
- To potential reopening protesters: 'We hear you ... but we need to do it in a safe way. The worst thing that could happen here is we start to reopen and we see a surge in cases.'
- Bellone thanks law enforcement agencies, those working in jails and helping stop the spread within those facilities. Announces he is providing testing for those men and women and their families, in partnership with Northwell Health. Begins Monday.
- Veterans town hall Thursday night, streaming on Bellone's Facebook page. Joined along with NFL player Gary Brown and Rep. Lee Zeldin.
- 2,459 people tested at hot spot testing sites - 47% positive rate, about the same as Wednesday.
- Huntington Station testing site is moving to downtown section of the town.
