Road closures for the Ryder Cup next week came earlier than expected, but for a different reason.
A water main break Friday afternoon at the intersection of Quaker Meeting House Road, Thomas Powell Boulevard and Round Swamp Road in Farmingdale shut down the area.
“We got pressurized gas, 60 pounds of pressurized gas, sitting right near our main, on top of our main, and we also have high powered electric coming through here that feeds up through Bethpage, I believe,” said John Falbo, supervisor of the Village of Farmingdale Water Department.
Residents on Thomas Powell Boulevard had no water Friday night.
“It’s an emergency, something happens, and we have to bear with it. That’s all we can do," Skip Bosco said.
Some neighbors said they saw trucks and forklifts during the week, in the same spot as the water main break.
“I have a feeling that all the heavy equipment had something to do with this," said Frank Sterber, who lives nearby.
“It’s over time; things happen. It could be because of vibration could’ve been, but I can’t definitively say at this point,” said Falbo.
Falbo added that one hydrant was affected in Bethpage State Park, but he does not expect the water main break to impact the Ryder Cup.
