Authorities say a man died after sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Oceanside Saturday afternoon while Nassau police were executing a parole warrant.
Officials say officers went to a basement apartment on Oceanside Road to apprehend a violent individual with a history of weapons charges. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, had recently violated the terms of his parole and was considered a danger to the community, police say.
According to Detective Michael Bitsko, officers found the suspect in the apartment with a weapon in his hand. Police say he shot himself after fleeing to another room.
Authorities say that responding officers did not fire their weapons.
"The officers demonstrated weapon discipline. Tremendous accolades go out to the responding officers here," Bitsko said.
Homeowner Avi Wald says the suspect was his tenant's friend.
