Some Wantagh residents say a neighborhood hotel is a magnet for crime.

The Jones Beach Hotel lies just off Merrick Road, between Cedar Creek Park and residential homes. Neighbors say they've witnessed drug deals, prostitution and other nefarious deeds around its property. Some say the hotel has a history of poorly behaved patrons that goes back decades.

"It's a horror," said Lenore Miller, of Wantagh. "I mean, we had problems years ago in that hotel...but now this is probably even worse."

Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads called for a Monday night meeting on the issue. He said some of the complaints circulating on social media had not been reported to police.

"Based on allegations like that, we want to make sure we get input from the community and find out things that aren't being reported," Rhoads said.

Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said the department will soon be making changes in the area, including to lighting and cameras.

County officials say Monday's meeting was about gathering a list of concerns to bring to the hotel owner. Their goal is to work with hotel ownership to improve safety conditions.

Management declined to comment on camera about the community's concerns.
