Thousands of NYPD officers gathered in Babylon today to bid a final farewell to their colleague Peter Figoski, who was killed earlier this week in Brooklyn while responding to a robbery.
Officers came together at the Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home, some of them driving from as far as Philadelphia, to pay their respects to a 22-veteran who they say led with a quiet confidence.
"He just changed people's lives, but he did it in such a quiet way," says Figoski's former partner Ricky Giordano.
Figoski, a father of four, was killed Monday when he interrupted an armed robbery. Police say 27-year-old Lamont Pride shot the officer once in the face. Pride was arrested alongside four other men who are also believed to be involved in the shooting.
The wake for Figoski will continue tomorrow, followed by a funeral at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Babylon. Nearby schools will be closed that day to accommodate the 15,000 people who are expected to attend the services.
