Some Wading River homeowners say their waterfront property is nearly in the water, and they blame the former power company LILCO.
Jim and Peggy LoScalzo say they?ve lost 45 feet of property this year due to erosion, which began when a LILCO power plant moved into the neighborhood years ago. The town sued the company, which agreed to replenish the sand. However, the couple says the plan is not working.
The LoScalzos say dredging used to be done in May, which would give the sand enough time to harden. However, the job has now been pushed back to the winter, allowing storms to wash away all the work.
National Grid is now responsible for the dredging. The company says it?s in full compliance with the agreement signed by all parties.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says if the dredging is done at any other time, it would disrupt the mating of piping plovers that that live just beyond the creeks.
The LoScalzos say the DEC should be worried about saving more than just birds.
