West Babylon residents are raising a stink at a proposed incinerator at the Bergen Point sewage treatment plant.
Residents say the smell is bad enough as dozens of trucks enter the facility daily to haul away sludge to places like West Virginia and Georgia. They say an incinerator could jeopardize their air quality and threaten their children?s health.
County officials ensure the incinerator would be state of the art and safe, but say they are still weighing the cost of burning versus hauling. According to officials, the incinerator would cost taxpayers an estimated $60 million. The county currently spends $7 to $8 million annually to have the sludge transported.
