Voters in East Moriches shot down the proposed school budget for the second time Tuesday.
The district initially asked for a 33 percent tax increase in the budget proposal rejected by almost a 2-to-1 margin on Super Tuesday last month. Sports, clubs and activities were cut to reduce the increase to 23 percent for the re-vote, which failed by 83 votes. The library, band and chorus were the programs saved under the revised plan, but those will also be lost on a contingency budget. Residents are still facing a tax hike of 21.5 percent.
In total, residents in 18 school districts headed to the polls for a re-vote. East Islip and Roosevelt voters also rejected their budget proposals and will be forced to a contingency budget. Lawrence, which was the 19th district with a failed budget on Super Tuesday, elected to go straight to contingency.
