Volunteers claim that animals are living in poor conditions at the Smithtown Animal Shelter, and they are calling on the shelter's director to resign.
Volunteer Christina Urbancik says she and several others have started a petition and website calling for the resignation of Shelter Supervisor George Beatty. They say Beatty isn't doing a good job.
"It would be 1 o'clock on a Saturday and the kennels would be full of feces - and this is when people would come in to adopt," says volunteer Deborah Maier. "Even the volunteers would have to step over the feces to get the dog out."
Beatty told News 12 that the allegations are lies and are a "disservice to the animals."
Smithtown Town Board member Robert Creighton says he has been to the shelter unannounced and did not see any issues of uncleanliness.
Beatty says he follows the New York state-established guidelines for the housing and care of the animals, and says to be wary of what you read on the Internet.
"I encourage anyone to come in and adopt a dog or cat. See for yourselves," said Beatty.
