The Greater Sayville Food Pantry is getting a much needed renovation this weekend as volunteers work to have the job completed by Monday.
Chestene Coverdale, the director of the pantry, says the shelter had been falling apart for the entire length of her 13 year tenure.
?It looked like a shed. It had no insulation. It didn't even have a foundation, which we didn't even know until they knocked it down,? Coverdale said.
Volunteers say they hope the job will be done by Monday, because the need for the pantry is great.
?With oil prices going through the roof, people?s mortgages going through the roof, many many people who we have never seen before are coming here to get enough food,? says Islip Town Councilman Christopher Bodkin (D).
Habitat for Humanity donated hours of labor and Loews donated thousands of dollars worth of lumber to the project.
